The Etruscan balcony
Bettona is often called the Etruscan balcony of Umbria, and rightly so. As you drive to this hidden town, you slowly chug uphill between cypress and olive trees. To your left and right, sweeping vistas unfold. Once you arrive, you walk along the old city walls and look out over green hills and cities such as Perugia, Assisi, and Spello. Eventful history
The serene atmosphere in the village hides a harsh past. The original Etruscan settlement, named Vettona, was attacked and partially destroyed in 1352. The old city wall refused to budge and remained partially intact, but the greater part of Bettona was not rebuilt until 1367. Meanwhile, this little gem is included in “I Borghi più belli d'Italia”—talk about an upgrade!
On discovery
Within those mighty medieval walls, a charming historic center awaits. Get lost in the maze of streets, vicolís, and small squares, and order a coffee at the bar on the central square and gathering place for the locals, Piazza Cavour. The entire village breathes a distant past; you stand still in time for a moment.
Dive a little deeper into the culture and take a look inside Santa Maria Maggiore, the most important church in Bettona, which also stubbornly held its ground during the attacks. The beautiful main altar is shaped like a temple, and the frescoes in the apse were created in 1939 by Gerardo Dottori.
Also step inside the Chiesa di San Crispolto, named after the village's patron saint. In the nearby Oratorio di Sant'Andrea, you can admire a series of frescoes from the school of Giotto. The Museo della Città, on the other hand, houses fine works by the renowned Umbrian painter Perugino.
