The Valley of Itria in Puglia

The Valle d'Itria is the region in Puglia where the famous trulli are located; the white whitewashed houses with their grey conical roofs and often white decorations at the top. For centuries, the trulli served as shelters for farmers, and the smaller examples were used as storage space for agricultural equipment.

OstuniAlso known as the White Town, it lies closest to the Adriatic coast, but not quite by the sea. As you drive up, you can already see it situated on a hill in the distance. You won't soon forget the image of the fairytale town surrounded by centuries-old olive groves with the blue sea in the background. The name “the White Town” says it all; the historic center is largely whitewashed, and small alleys and streets are connected by countless white steps. When you stand at the edge of the village, you have a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape.

Alberobelloand Locorotondo are the most famous Trulli villages of the Valle d'Itria. Alberobello has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1996, and with its narrow streets adorned with colorful flowers, it is sure to impress you. Here too, just like for Ostuni, try to avoid the high season and seek out the quieter periods. While you are in the area, take a look at locorotondo.

Finally, the village Cisterninothat you also shouldn't miss during your visit to Puglia. Here again, the same scene as in Alberobello and Locorotondo… trulli! In fact, the entire valley is dotted with these little houses, and perhaps it would be nice to pay a little more attention to a place like Cisternino. This village is situated slightly higher (393 m), just like Ostuni, and from various points you have a beautiful view over the Valle d'Itria.
