For adults, the burning of the Befana is usually the most enjoyable part of the children's party. This custom is found primarily in the northern provinces of Italy. After an effigy made of straw and wood has been driven around the town, the 'old witch' is placed on the pyre. Entire villages gather around the fire to ring in the new year together.
Because it is a public holiday for Italians, quite a few activities are organized around Epiphany. There are markets and musical performances, but museums also often open their doors for free on the Sunday around Epiphany. In Pistoia, La Befana descends from the large bell tower on January 6, while in Livorno she hands out gifts to the children.
