In search of history along the Via Francigena

The Via Francigena is the medieval road that connected Canterbury in England with Rome. It has a long history. In the Middle Ages, the Lombards vied with the Byzantines for more Italian territory. From a strategic point of view, they wanted to connect the Kingdom of Pavia with the southern duchies. This led to a route that crossed the Apennines, along the Magra Valley towards Lucca—the “Via di Monte Bardone”, named after the old name of the Cisa Pass.

Challenge
In addition to the historical importance of the route, there are more reasons to take a walk along the Via Francigena. For instance, it is a very varied route, if only because it leads through five countries with a very diverse landscape. Since there is still no good route description available, the Via Francigena can certainly be considered a challenge. Volunteers and municipalities are working hard on signage, but walking is simply not yet as popular among Italians themselves as it is among the Dutch. Until then, this means finding the right way yourself. With its total length of 1900 kilometers, the Via Francigena enough time for that.
